Spring|Summer 2022 Style Translated

Even in a pandemic, it’s possible you are still interested in what trends are driving what you see online and in the stores. Are you tired of sweats and yoga pants, and maybe now interested in what’s new?

I was curious and took a quick dive into all things style, to see just what was out there. I haven’t cared for so long, it was fun to look. Some looks were truly horrific, but I found some trends that translate really well for us stylish ladies of a certain age…

Before we go there, I found some notes that I had taken from a very old You Look Fab post, with wise reminders. They still hold up and I wanted to share.

  • “Don’t compare and despair…compete with the best version of yourself and no one else.” Comparison really is the thief of joy.

  • “Listen to how you feel in an outfit. Make sure it meets your preferences, needs and emotions - don’t take emotion out of your style.”

  • “There is a version of every trend for everyone.”

  • “Dress the body you have right now.”

  • “Celebrate your body because it is an incredible gift that deserves care and praise at every age.” Look what it’s gotten you through!

  • “Pat yourself on the back when you get it right.”

  • “Have fun and don’t take it too seriously - experiment and learn from what doesn’t work.”

  • “Style is neither a size nor an age, but the energy and confidence that you express.”

What we wear should make us feel authentically ourselves - powerful, confident and uniquely us!

Ok back to Spring|Summer 2022.

Here’s what’s trending that I’m NOT interested in…

  • low rise pants (I’m done with the muffin top situation)

  • bra tops with overshirts or blazers (maybe for the housewives)

  • fringing details (tassels on accessories are ok - no macrame)

  • wild 60’s mod prints

  • giant puffed sleeves

  • tiny shrunk blazers and giant voluminous coats

  • and, wait for it…..catsuits (nope).

Here’s what we can definitely work with… (click on pictures for links)

  • Purple - the Pantone Color of the Year is “Veri Peri”. If you like purple, there are shades for everyone - warmer and cooler, darker and pastels. I don’t especially love purple, but I do love a pale bluer perwinkle. (This ain’t it.)

  • Sweats 2.0 - leisure bottoms are here to stay for awhile. Soft pants and knitted flares or cropped bottoms can be so comfy and very chic.

  • Voluminous Shapes - giant puffiness is too much, but oversized shirting can be very classic and good looking. And forgiving…

  • Platform Shoes - chunky soles are in, whether on loafers or clogs. Some of these are really comfy too. Combat boots are not my jam, but they definitely count here!

  • Regency looks - supposedly this was inspired by the Bridgerton series and it’s back for Season 2. This includes corsets, pearls, ladylike cardigans and prim florals. Everybody can do pearls, and cardigans and florals are easy for many of us. If you rock a feminine or classic look, this is right up your alley.

  • Cutouts - i’m not talking about midriff cutouts in your dress or bathing suit (unless you can pull it off - then do it girl!) But a cleverly placed shoulder cutout on a sweater, or large keyhole back on a pretty blouse is so nice. “Cold shoulder” tops have been around for a few years, and are very chic. Girl, I’ve got fabulous shoulders….

  • Bright and Bold Color - this appears in top to toe columns of color, to color blocking, to a bright colorful bag as an accessory. We are talking specifically kelly green, tangy lime, radiant yellow and sunset orange….hmmmmm…I’m going with a pop of color on my bag, as opposed to sheathed in orange…

  • Sequins and Shimmer - even during daytime, is back. I think this can be done nicely, if it fits your personality, or if it’s subtle.

I love this blouse and have had my eye on it. I would have to tack up the deep v though.

  • Minis - if you have the legs, I say go for an above the knee skirt, and if not, you can wear tights with a shorter skirt. A micro-mini, not so much.

  • Maxis - been around forever and in my opinion, they never really go out of style.

  • Bold Stripes - also been around forever and always in style. Breton tops are a classic for spring, as are striped sweaters.

Love this - have it in my cart.

Another cute top that’s classic.

  • Denim on Denim - not my thing, but if you like it, do it. It sure makes getting dressed easy. Watch your proportions though.

That’s my take on what’s coming down the pike and while we aren’t interested in everything out there, there are certainly enough “lewks” available for us to look great and up to date! That is, if you care. ;)

PS - I realize that the first image is a stock image of a Russian Vogue magazine, but, well, I wasn’t feeling like posing in my stilettos today…
